I wouldn't be surprised if more people out there got fed up of buying PC
hardware as a result of Windows updates rendering their machines
unbootable or hardware simply dying for no reason as it often does. It's
hard not to turn your eye toward Apple when you see that your AirPods
seamlessly connect, that wireless connectivity is always reliable, that
keyboards generally feel nice to type on, that battery life is stellar,
that the screen is gorgeous, that it always wakes after sleep, etc..
Other than gaming, there's no real selling point to having a PC over a
Mac anymore.

Well, why did Microsoft just report a 20% decline in Surface $sales?

“Microsoft has reported today that the company is continuing to the feel
the sting of the shrinking PC market …. According to Microsoft, Windows OEM
revenue decreased by 12% while Devices, which refers to Surface products,
was down 20% or $339 million”.

The reality is that people are holding onto their computers for longer
because machines don't need to be upgraded every two or three years like
in the 80s to 2000s. In many cases, even when an upgrade is strongly
recommended, people opt to install Linux (by themselves or with the help
of a friend) because buying a new machine is mostly pointless when most
of what you do gets done on a smartphone.

Correct. Which explains why Windows PC sales have been declining for 10
years.

Yeah, I would imagine that the only people constantly upgrading their
hardware are the ones using their PC to play games. If games are not
your thing, there is truly no incentive to buying new hardware. Some
professionals need more RAM and processing power for video editing or
programming, but that's hardly the majority of people.
