The bad guy didn't have to register a recovery email with Proton Mail.
Ask me how I know this.

Also the bad guy could have used Tor for his Proton Mail activities.

The main problem with his iCloud account, if we assume he owned it due to
owning an iOS device, is there is no privacy possible on iOS devices.

Every other common consumer operating system will easily allow you to NOT
register the device to a mothership tracking account (yes, even Win11).

Not only is it only Apple who requires that you be logging into that
mothership tracking account 24/7/365, but Apple will unilaterally brick
your device if you refuse to constantly log into the device.

Again, ask me how I know this.

Not only is no account needed to use an Android phone (or Windows/Linux),
but Apple literally inserts your unique tracking ID into EVERY app you
install on your iOS device so that they can track app activity.

Why do you think Apple requires you to be logged into their servers?
Why do you think Apple adds a unique tracking ID to every app installed?

Apple's lack of privacy is coupled with an immense lack of security too.
Consider that the iPhone is the most exploited phone in phone history!

You can't have any privacy or security on any iOS device, by design.
Note that Apple also provides the worst hotfix support in the industry.

Say what you will about that, but Apple is uniquely a piece of work,
in the industry. Look at the cost of options for storage on an iMac,
and tell me with a straight face you'd buy anything, from that goofy
company.
